Loyalty program restaurant: why it's profitable and how to implement it

A loyal customer is worth 5x a casual customer. Yet few restaurants have a real loyalty program. Here are the best practices.

Pepprio 6 min read

Acquiring a new client costs 5 to 10 times more than retaining an existing one. Yet, the majority of restaurants do not have a structured loyalty program, or simply rely on an archaic punch card. Here’s how to build a modern and profitable system.

Why Loyalty is So Profitable

Loyalty is a cornerstone of successful business strategies. It’s not merely a nice-to-have; it’s a powerful driver of profitability and long-term growth. Here’s a breakdown of why fostering customer loyalty is so crucial:

  • Increased Revenue: Loyal customers spend more. They’re more likely to purchase additional products or services, and they tend to buy more frequently than new customers.
  • Reduced Marketing Costs: Acquiring new customers is significantly more expensive than retaining existing ones. Loyal customers require less marketing investment.
  • Brand Advocacy: Loyal customers become brand ambassadors, recommending your products or services to their friends and family. This word-of-mouth marketing is incredibly valuable and trustworthy.
  • Price Insensitivity: Loyal customers are often less sensitive to price increases. They’re willing to pay a premium for the value and trust they’ve built with your brand.
  • Stability and Predictability: A base of loyal customers provides a stable revenue stream, making it easier to forecast sales and plan for the future.

Building loyalty requires a consistent focus on customer experience, personalized service, and a genuine commitment to meeting customer needs. It’s an ongoing investment that yields substantial returns.

Simple maths of loyalty

A sporadic customer: orders 1-2 times, basket €25, leaves you a net margin of €5-10.

Loyal customer: places 8-15 orders per year, basket size €30 (often more than an occasional buyer), generates a net annual profit margin of €250-500.

Loyal customers generate 25 to 50 times more value.

Converting 10% of your occasional customers into loyal customers can transform the profitability of your restaurant.

The recursive effect

A loyal customer:

  • Naturally increases their average order value over time (trust)
  • Becomes an ambassador (talks about you to their loved ones)
  • Forgives occasional mistakes more easily
  • Is not sensitive to being close to the competition by pixel

All of this is turning into a margin.

Loyalty Program Models

Cumulative points system

The customer earns X points per euro spent. At Y points, they receive an advantage (discount, free dish, dessert).

Advantages: simple to understand, fair. Disadvantages: can seem impersonal, doesn't encourage rapid recurrence.

Frequency Model

Every 5 orders, the 6th is -50%, or 1 free dish every 10 orders. Rewards recurrence.

Advantages: encourages repeat visits, simple. Disadvantages: can be perceived as transactional.

Statuses Model

The customer progresses through tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) with increasing benefits. Type "Costco" or "airline".

Advantages: strong psychological effect (fear of losing status), differentiation. Disadvantages: complex to manage, requires volume.

Premium / Subscription Model

The client pays a subscription (monthly or annual) which gives them access to permanent benefits (-10% on everything, free shipping…).

Advantages: predictable income, strong customer engagement. Disadvantages: requires a critical mass to function.

Experiential Model

Monetary rewards: invitations to events, early access to new dishes, tastings.

Advantages: creates an emotional connection, differentiating. Disadvantages: less quantifiable, requires marketing involvement.

Which model for which restaurant?

Independent neighborhood restaurant

Simple "frequency" model: "Every 8 orders, your dessert is free." Easy to understand, easy to implement.

Michelin-starred restaurant

A culinary experience offering a refined and innovative menu.

Discover exceptional dishes crafted with the finest ingredients.

Reservations are highly recommended.

Experiential model: invitations to tasting evenings, exclusive exchanges with the chef, early access to new menus.

Chain or multi-site

Template "statuts": structured program with levels, valid across all sites. Requires a solid technical infrastructure.

Strong delivery concept

Premium/subscription model on the direct channel (your website/app). Inspired by Uber One or Deliveroo Plus, restaurant version.

How to set up the program

  1. Download the latest version of the software from our website: https://www.example.com/download
  2. Extract the archive.
  3. Run the installer. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Create a new database.
  5. Import the initial data.
  6. Configure the program settings.
  7. Test the program.

Side technical

Several options depending on your stack:

Loyalty module for your POS

Most modern POS systems (Zelty, Lightspeed, Innovorder, Cashpad, Popina) have a built-in loyalty module. Advantage: native integration, no double entry.

Specialized solution Dedicated platforms: Comarch, Loyalty Operator, Como, Punchh. More powerful but more expensive.

Brand App If you have your own command app, integrate the program directly.

As a client, I am looking for a reliable partner to help me with my marketing needs. I need someone who understands my business and can develop effective strategies to reach my target audience. I value transparency, communication, and a collaborative approach.

Specifically, I'm interested in services such as:

  • Social media management
  • Content creation (blog posts, articles, videos)
  • Email marketing
  • SEO optimization

I'm open to discussing different options and tailoring a package to fit my budget and goals. My priority is finding a long-term relationship built on trust and mutual success.

The client must be able to:

  • Register easily (ideally in 30 seconds)
  • Track their points / progress
  • See their available rewards
  • Use their rewards without friction

A complex experience kills the program. Prioritize simplicity.

Operational side

The team needs to be trained:

  • Customer recognition (identification at the time of order)
  • Flawless application of benefits
  • Communication of program updates

A well-designed but poorly executed program in a meeting/delivery is a failure.

Loyalty Program Delivery

  • Points: You earn 1 point for every €1 spent.
  • Rewards:
    • 100 points = €5 discount
    • 200 points = Free delivery
    • 500 points = €25 discount

Important specificity: on platforms (Uber Eats, Deliveroo), you do not have access to the customer’s identity. You cannot associate an order with a home loyalty account.

Program side platform: Uber Eats and Deliveroo offer their own programs (Uber One, Deliveroo Plus). You can participate, but the customer is loyal to the platform, not to you.

Solution 2 : redirection vers votre canal direct Include in each delivery order a flyer "Register for our loyalty program on monrestaurant.fr and get -15% on your next direct order". Converts delivery customers into direct customers.

Solution 3 : program on your direct channel only. The loyalty program is reserved for orders via your website/app, not through platforms. Encourage customers to prioritize your channel.

Loyalty Program KPIs

  • Nombre total de membres: 12,345
  • Taux de rétention: 78% (sur 12 mois)
  • Valeur à vie du client (LTV): $350
  • Taux de conversion (de membre à client): 22%
  • Taux de participation aux programmes de récompenses: 45%
  • Satisfaction client (CSAT): 8.5/10
  • Net Promoter Score (NPS): 65
  • Coût d'acquisition client (CAC): $50
  • Retour sur investissement (ROI) du programme de fidélité: 150%

To measure performance:

  • Enrollment Rate: % of clients who join the program
  • Engagement Rate: % of active sign-ups (1+ order in the last 30 days)
  • Purchase Frequency: number of orders per customer per month (before vs. after registration)
  • Average Basket: average order value of members vs. non-members
  • Reward Redemption Rate: % of rewards earned that are used
  • CLV (Customer Lifetime Value): total value of a member customer vs. non-member

These KPIs show whether the program is truly generating value or is just a marketing cost.

Traps to Avoid

Here are some common pitfalls to watch out for:

  • Over-reliance on automation: While automation can boost productivity, it’s crucial to maintain a human touch and critical thinking. Don’t blindly trust automated systems.
  • Ignoring user feedback: User feedback is invaluable. Actively solicit and analyze it to identify areas for improvement and ensure your product or service meets user needs.
  • Lack of clear communication: Ambiguity leads to confusion and frustration. Be clear, concise, and consistent in your communication.
  • Neglecting security: Security is paramount. Implement robust security measures to protect your data and your users’ data.
  • Failing to adapt: The world is constantly changing. Be prepared to adapt your strategies and approaches to stay ahead of the curve.

Remember, vigilance and a proactive approach are key to avoiding these traps.

Too generous program

If your benefits eat into your margin, the program is counterproductive. Calibrate: an advantage of 5-15% of the value consumed is typically the sweet spot.

Inactive program. A program that is launched and forgotten does not work. Regular communication, animations, and occasional surprises maintain engagement.

Program too complex. “5 points per euro, except on Tuesdays (10 points), except for beverages (3 points), except if you are Gold status…”. No one follows it. Simplicity is key.

No communication

The client must know there is a program. In-store, on packaging, on the website, in confirmation emails: multiply the points of contact.

A well-designed loyalty program transforms your business: improved retention, increased average order value, and a qualified customer base that you own. It’s one of the most profitable marketing investments for a restaurant – far more than platform advertising, for example.

The goal isn't to copy your neighbor's program, but to build one that corresponds to your concept and your clientele. When executed well, it becomes a sustainable asset for your brand.
